When it comes to engagement sessions there are SO many routes to take when it comes to a photoshoot celebrating this occasion. Maybe you are a couple who like to keep the images filled with light on a sandy beach here in Hawaii. Perhaps you prefer a less traditional style with photos splashing in a river or deep in the rainforest. Whichever you choose the important thing is to make the style true to what fits you.

With this lovely couple they wanted to have a mix — Some fine art beach photos on the North Shore of Maui + some photos of them doing what they love in a place they love which was skateboarding/swimming in Iao Valley. HELLOOOOO TO THE MIX ! It fit them perfectly and as you can tell with the surplus of images in this post ( imagine the size of their gallery ) it was a STUNNING session !

When it comes to planning your engagement photoshoot here in Maui there are a few helpful tips I will share to make it the session of your dreams :

Choose a photographer whose style you love and that you feel comfortable sharing your vision with

That may sound like a no brainer but it’s an important one. You want to make sure to find someone who you feel like you would be comfortable around and trust to deliver what you are wanting. With this pair they knew I would give them bright colorful photos that would all be on film. If you are unsure about what you would like location and style wise look at a photographer’s portfolio - send them an inquiry and ask for some ideas. Personally if I have a client who has an idea but not a full idea or no idea of what they would like I send over several ideas ( with photo examples ) to paint a clear image to see if it makes them excited to follow that plan OR sparks some inspiration we could build off of to make the perfect photoshoot.

2. Go with a plan or location that fits you

THIS IS FOR YOU * INSERT CLAPPING EMOJI HANDS * but really. This session is not for your sister, best friend, cousin, or neighbor. IT IS FOR YOU SO MAKE IT FIT YOU. This is sooo important. An engagement session is celebrating you two ushering a new chapter into your lives together. You will look back on these images to relive the milestones in your life so make sure to go with a location or idea that is true to you two are. If you feel like you both gravitate towards dinners out at new trendy restaurants, weekends at a winery, and brunches with a view then it sounds like a beautiful formal beach session on a seaside cliff with amazing views OR a photoshoot surrounded by blooming lavender plants in Upcountry Maui on a rolling hillside would be two ideas that fit you. If you are more of an outdoors couple spending the weekend surfing, hiking in the mountains, or camping with friends lets make the session reflect that ! This can be done with a photoshoot of you two catching waves here in Hawaii or on our volcano Haleakala high above the clouds with the most incredible views. There are so many routes to go to fit your style.

3. Do not short yourself out on time

THIS is super important ! You most likely did not meet and within 30 minutes decide to get married so carry that over and don’t rush your photoshoot. I understand if you may not have done photos before a longer photoshoot might not sound ideal - totally understandable. However, I promise you once the session gets going and the vibe is flowing time will fly by ! Seriously. In order to allow for any outfit changes, different locations, or possibly some time in the water set a session time anywhere for 1 hour - 2 hours. ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE. You’re going to make some amazing memories during this shoot so don’s rush it and enjoy yourselves.
