Sunrise vs. Sunset : Choosing the Best Time for Your Maui Photoshoot

Why the Time of Day on Maui Matters

On an island where the light changes minute by minute, the time of day can completely shape your photos. Maui’s beaches face different directions, the trade winds rise and fall, and clouds roll in at certain times—so picking sunrise or sunset isn’t just a scheduling choice; it’s part of the art of your session. Lighting controls a photoshoot more than a beautiful location does - it is incredibly important.

The Magic of Sunrise Sessions on Maui

If you’re an early riser (or traveling from the mainland and still adjusting to the time difference), a sunrise session can be pure magic.

  • Soft, dreamy light: The early morning glow is diffused, painting your skin tones in pastel warmth. Ideal for families and couples who want gentle, natural color tones.

  • Peaceful beaches: Most of Maui is still asleep, so sunrise means empty shorelines and calm waters. You’ll often have the beach to yourself.

  • Cooler temps and calm trade winds: Before 10 AM, the island’s winds are minimal—your hair stays in place, your dress flows just right, and kids aren’t overheating.

  • Best for: Families with young kids (they’re often up early anyway- truly…trust me on this one), honeymooners looking for quiet, and anyone staying near South Maui (Wailea, Makena Cove, Palauea).

Pro tip: The east-facing beaches like Baldwin, Mama’s , or early-light coves in Wailea get golden warmth just minutes after sunrise—perfect for that fresh, island feel.

The Glow of a Sunset Session

Sunset is what most people imagine when they picture “Maui golden hour”—and for good reason.

  • Rich golden tones: West side ( Kapalua ) can provide lovely dramatic backdrops for sunset but weather is easier to predict for sunset South Side ( Kihei, Wailea ) sessions.

  • Romantic vibe: The light gets richer every minute, ideal for couples or proposals.

  • Timing flexibility: Great for those who prefer a slow morning

  • Best for: couples who love a bold, glowing aesthetic. ** To families - keep in mind the time difference. Most kiddos are pretty tuckered out by the time “go time” rolls around for a sunset photoshoot from the day’s activities.

**** Something very important to keep in mind is that Maui does not experience a “golden hour”. Evening sessions will start off with harsher light and then quickly transition into around 15 minutes of golden hour mixed into sunset. This is not said to scare anyone away from an evening photoshoot but to prep you to expect that harsh lighting for the majority of your session where lighting will then quickly transition.

Pro tip: If going with a sunset session prep for wind. This means choose a hairstyle/outfit that you will be concerned about during the photoshoot.

How to Choose the Right Time for Your Maui Session

Ask yourself:

  • Are you traveling with kids who wake up early? → Go sunrise.

  • Are you hoping for that deep Maui glow ? → Go sunset.

  • Do you want to avoid crowds and midday heat? → Sunrise again.

  • Are you staying on the West Side? → Sunrise will be easiest logistically since sunset sessions should take place on the South Side.

Local insight: Trade winds almost always pick up by midday, so the earlier you shoot, the smoother your experience will be—especially for long hair, flowing dresses, and film photography.

My Take as a Maui Photographer

After photographing hundreds of sessions across the islands for almost 9 years, I’ve learned there’s no “bad” time of day—just the right match for your vision. Sunrise feels intimate, unfiltered, and calm. Sunset feels cinematic and soulful. Both hold the magic of Maui; it just depends on how you want to remember it.

Planning Your Maui Photo Session

If you’re planning a photo shoot on Maui, it’s best to reserve your session a few month in advance—especially if you want a specific time of day or location.( If you just found my work and would be inquiring in a shorter timeframe than that feel free to still reach out though availability may be limited)

I help clients choose the perfect beach, coordinate timing with sunrise and sunset charts, and adjust based on local wind and tide forecasts so that your experience is relaxed and stress-free.
