There are plenty of reasons to book photos while you’re in Maui, and they definitely don’t all require getting engaged first.

Maybe you’re celebrating an anniversary or honeymoon. Maybe there’s a ring involved and you’re planning a surprise proposal. Or maybe you’re simply taking a trip together and want something better than a collection of iPhone photos and selfies to remember it by.

As a Maui photographer, I photograph couples all over the island for engagements, proposals, anniversaries, honeymoons and plenty of just-because sessions. Maui gives us a pretty incredible mix to work with too. Bright blue water, lava rock, palms, greenery, cliffs, long stretches of sand and, when the weather cooperates, some seriously beautiful light.

The biggest question usually isn’t whether Maui is a good place for couples photos.

It’s figuring out what vibe of Maui you want in them.

Choosing the Right Location for Couples Photos in Maui

One of my favorite parts of planning a session is helping couples choose a location.

You don’t necessarily need to arrive knowing exactly where you want to go. In fact, most people don’t.

Different parts of Maui photograph very differently, so when I’m helping a couple plan their session, I’m looking at more than whether a beach is pretty. Time of day, crowds, wind, accessibility, direction of the light and the overall look you’re drawn to all matter.

South Maui: Wailea + Makena

Wailea and Makena are two of my most photographed areas for Maui couples photography, and for good reason.

This side of the island gives us beautiful sandy beaches, lava rock, palms and that bright tropical color people tend to picture when they think about Maui.

Some of my go-to South Maui locations include Palauea Beach, Wailea, Keawakapu and Makena.

Palauea is especially beautiful early in the morning. The beach has a great mix of sand, greenery and lava rock, which means we can create a lot of variety without spending the session moving from place to place.

If you’re staying at one of the resorts in Wailea, South Maui can also make logistics incredibly easy.

West Maui: Kapalua + Ironwoods + D.T. Fleming

For couples staying on the west side, Kapalua gives us a completely different look.

Kapalua Bay has beautiful water, palms and a classic tropical Maui feel, while Ironwoods brings in more dramatic coastline, cliffs and a completely different landscape.

D.T. Fleming is another favorite when I want plenty of room to move and a combination of beach and greenery.

Your location doesn’t have to be the most famous beach on Maui to photograph beautifully. Sometimes the best choice is simply the place that gives us the right combination of light, scenery and breathing room for your session.

Sunrise or Sunset: Which Is Better for Maui Couples Photos?

This is probably one of the questions I answer the most as a Maui couples photographer.

And annoyingly, the answer really is: it depends.

I photograph both.

Sunrise sessions

Early morning sessions are one of my favorite options in Maui.

Yes, the alarm is early. But there are some major perks.

Beaches are typically much quieter, temperatures are cooler and we have a lot more freedom to move around without constantly working around beach chairs, swimmers and people walking through the background.

Morning light can also be gorgeous here. Depending on the location and conditions, we can get everything from soft pastel light to bright sun and beautiful blue water.

And if you’ve just arrived from the mainland and your body still thinks 6:00 AM is 9:00 AM, this is the time to take advantage of it.

Sunset sessions

If warm evening light is what you picture when you think about your Maui photos, sunset may be your answer.

Sunset gives us richer golden light and, depending on the evening, some incredible color after the sun drops.

The tradeoff is that Maui beaches are public and evenings are popular. Some locations can get verybusy around sunset, which is why location choice becomes especially important.

Neither one is universally better. I would rather put you at the right location at the right time than tell every couple that one lighting situation is the only way to go.

You Don’t Have to Be Engaged to Book Couples Photos

Please read that one again.

Some of my favorite sessions are simply two people who want photographs together while they’re in Maui.

A Maui couples photoshoot can be for your honeymoon, anniversary, baby-moon, engagement, proposal or absolutely no milestone whatsoever.

You can just want good photos together.

That’s reason enough.

And honestly, there’s something fun about documenting an ordinary chapter of your relationship instead of waiting for one of the traditionally “big” moments to give yourself permission.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Maui

Now, if there is a ring involved, that’s a different kind of planning.

Surprise proposals are one of my favorite things to photograph, but they’re also sessions where the details really matter.

Location, timing and where you’re standing when you propose all need to be worked out beforehand. I coordinate those pieces with the person proposing so you aren’t trying to find your photographer on the beach while simultaneously pretending absolutely nothing suspicious is happening.

After the proposal, we transition into a couples session so you leave with photographs of the actual proposal and portraits together afterward.

What Do You Actually Do During a Couples Photoshoot?

You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose.

That’s my job.

I’ll direct you when direction is needed, but I don’t want to spend your entire session arranging every finger and telling you exactly where to look.

We’ll walk. We’ll move. You’ll get close. You’ll look at the camera for some because, yes, I still believe in a beautiful portrait where everyone is actually looking at me.

And we’ll make plenty where you’re focused on each other instead.

I like galleries to have a mix.

Some photographs should be the ones you immediately want to frame. Others should feel like little pieces of what that morning or evening actually looked like.

Digital + Film Photography in Maui

This is where my work is a little different.

I photograph with both digital and film, and film has been part of my work for years.

There is something about photographing Maui on actual film that just works. The color of the water, skin tones, greenery, bright sun and all of the imperfect little characteristics of the medium fit the island beautifully.

I regularly photograph with medium-format film alongside my digital cameras, depending on the session and collection.

Film isn’t something I use because I want every photograph to look faded or overly nostalgic. Quite the opposite. I love color, and Maui has a lot of it.

My goal is for the two formats to live together naturally in your gallery while still giving you the texture and character that make film photographs feel different.

What Should You Wear for Couples Photos in Maui?

You don’t need to dress like you’re attending the same event, and you definitely don’t need matching outfits.

I generally recommend choosing pieces that work together rather than trying to make them identical.

Think about movement and the location, too.

A dress that catches some wind can photograph beautifully at the beach. Linen, lighter fabrics and pieces you can comfortably walk in usually make sense here. If we’re going somewhere with lava rock or a little more terrain, I’ll also let you know ahead of time so you aren’t unknowingly signing yourself up to navigate it in shoes that make absolutely no sense.

When Should You Book Your Maui Photographer?

Earlier is always easier, particularly if you have a specific date or sunset session in mind.

That said, I photograph visitors throughout the year and occasionally have openings close to a travel date, so it’s still worth reaching out even if your Maui trip is coming up quickly.

Maui Couples Photography FAQ

Where is the best place for couples photos in Maui?

There isn’t one single “best” beach. The best location for your session depends on where you’re staying, the time of day, the scenery you like, and current conditions.

Do you photograph Maui engagements and surprise proposals?

Yes. I photograph both Maui engagement sessions and surprise proposals. Proposal sessions are planned in advance so we can coordinate the location, timing and exact proposal spot while keeping everything a surprise.

Do you photograph honeymoons and anniversaries?

Absolutely. Couples sessions aren’t limited to engagements. Honeymoons, anniversaries and vacation sessions are all great reasons to book a Maui photographer while you’re here.

Is sunrise too early for photos in Maui?

It’s early, but it’s worth considering. Sunrise sessions generally mean fewer people on the beach and give us beautiful early-morning conditions. They’re particularly convenient during the first few days of your trip if you’re still waking up early because of the time difference.

Can our session include both film and digital photos?

Yes. I work with both digital photography and real photographic film. If film is particularly important to you, mention that when you inquire so we can talk about the best collection for what you’re looking for.
