What Happens If It Rains During Your Maui Photo Session?
If you’re planning a family or couples photo session while visiting Maui, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve checked the weather forecast more than once before your trip. And I completely understand why.
Weather is one of the biggest concerns I hear from clients planning their Maui photos, especially when a session is something you’ve been looking forward to as part of your vacation.
The good news? Maui weather can change incredibly quickly, and seeing a little rain on your forecast doesn’t necessarily mean your photo session is going to be rainy, or that it’s time to change your plans.
I Keep an Eye on the Weather for You
Every Maui family, couples, and engagement session I photograph includes a weather check-in one week before your session, regardless of which package you book.
I’ll take a look at what the weather patterns are doing around the island and let you know what I’m seeing.
Most of the time, there’s nothing we need to change. Maui is a tropical island, so seeing rain somewhere in the forecast is completely normal, even on an otherwise beautiful day.
If there is a larger weather system approaching or something in the forecast that gives me reason to be concerned about your session, I’ll reach out and we’ll talk through our options. That could mean moving your session to another available day or, depending on conditions, choosing a different part of the island.
This is also why I always recommend leaving a little flexibility in your Maui itinerary when possible. You absolutely don’t need to keep your entire vacation schedule open for photos, but having another morning or evening available can be incredibly helpful if Maui weather decides to change our original plans.
Maui Weather Can Look Completely Different Across the Island
One of the most important things to know about weather on Maui is that the forecast for one part of the island doesn’t necessarily tell us what’s happening everywhere else.
You can have rain on one side of Maui and sunshine somewhere else.
This is something I pay especially close attention to with sessions on the West Side. Kapalua is absolutely beautiful, but passing showers are also a very normal part of photographing there. Rain can move down from the West Maui Mountains even when the overall forecast looks fairly sunny.
Sometimes, if the West Side isn’t looking promising, moving a session to South Maui gives us much better conditions.
That’s part of why I don’t want my clients stressing over every little rain icon they see on their weather app. I’ll be watching the weather leading up to your session and will communicate with you if I think we actually need to make a change.
What If It Starts Raining During Our Maui Photo Session?
Sometimes we’ve checked the forecast, everything looks great, everyone arrives at the beach…and Maui has another idea.
It happens.
My first goal is always to photograph your session in the best conditions possible. I’m never intentionally sending us out into pouring rain just because “rain photographs beautifully.” Sunshine will always be something I’m hoping for!
But unexpected passing showers are part of living and working on a tropical island.
If it’s a light shower or mist and everyone is comfortable continuing, we can keep photographing and see what Maui gives us. Many passing showers are brief, and conditions can change surprisingly quickly.
Other times, we’ll find some cover, give the rain a few minutes to move through and continue once it clears.
And occasionally, we simply embrace it.
Some of my favorite unexpected moments have happened during sessions where a little rain rolled through. The clouds can create incredibly soft light, the colors around us become richer, and on the West Side especially, there is always the possibility of a rainbow appearing behind us.
I’ve photographed hundreds of sessions around Kapalua and seeing a rainbow pop out after a passing shower never gets old.
What If You Don’t Want Photos in the Rain?
That is completely okay, too.
Your comfort matters more to me than forcing a session to continue just because we’re already there.
If conditions become uncomfortable or the weather is clearly not going to cooperate, we’ll talk through the options we have based on your travel dates and my availability. That could mean waiting for a shower to pass, moving locations when possible, or rescheduling.
Thankfully, I’ve had some wonderful clients over the years who have been willing to go with the flow when an unexpected shower arrives, and we’ve created some pretty beautiful photographs because of it.
But you’ll never be expected to stand in weather you’re uncomfortable with just for the sake of getting the shot.
Should You Worry If Your Maui Forecast Shows Rain?
In most cases, no.
Weather apps can be helpful for seeing larger patterns, but a rain icon on your Maui vacation forecast isn’t automatically a reason to panic or cancel your photo session.
Island weather is incredibly localized and can change quickly. A forecast several days away may look completely different by the time your session arrives, which is exactly why I continue watching conditions as we get closer rather than making decisions too early.

Otherwise, pack your outfits, enjoy your vacation, and let me handle keeping an eye on the weather.
