Kapalua Bay Maui Photography Guide
One of Maui’s Most Beautiful Sunrise Beaches
With calm turquoise water, golden sand, and a crescent-shaped bay framed by lava rock, Kapalua Bay has become one of Maui’s most loved beaches—and it’s easy to see why. It’s one of my favorite locations for sunrise sessions, especially for families and couples who want beautiful scenery without hiking to get there.
One of the things I love most about Kapalua Bay is that no two mornings ever feel exactly the same. Some days the ocean is glassy and still, while others bring passing showers, rainbows, or colorful clouds over the water. It always feels a little different, which makes photographing here so much fun.
Best Time for Photos
While Kapalua Bay is beautiful at sunset, I only offer portrait sessions here in the early morning. The beach becomes much busier later in the day, and parking often begins filling by around 8:00 a.m. Sunrise gives us a quieter beach, easier parking, and a much more relaxed experience.
Is Kapalua Bay a Good Fit for Families?
Kapalua Bay is one of my favorite locations for families because there’s plenty of space to spread out without feeling crowded. It’s a wonderful choice for immediate families, large extended families, couples, maternity sessions, and even surprise proposals.
That said, getting to the beach does require walking down a flight of stairs and along a paved pathway before reaching the sand. If someone in your group tires easily or isn’t comfortable with stairs, another location may be a better fit.
Accessibility & Parking
Parking at Kapalua Bay is paid and located just above the beach. There are plenty of spaces available compared to some Maui beaches, but they fill surprisingly early, especially after sunrise.
From the parking lot, you’ll walk down a set of stairs and along the beach access path before reaching the sand.
Ocean & Weather Conditions
The water at Kapalua Bay is often calm, making it one of my favorite beaches for ending a session in the ocean when conditions are safe. Like anywhere on Maui, though, the ocean can change from day to day, so I always keep an eye on the forecast before your session.
Because Kapalua is on Maui’s west side, it’s also common to have brief passing showers roll over the West Maui Mountains—even on mornings that call for sunshine. The good news is they usually move through quickly, and they’re often followed by one of my favorite parts of photographing here: rainbows stretching over the bay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you offer sunset sessions at Kapalua Bay?
I don’t. While sunset is beautiful here, the beach becomes much busier throughout the day. Sunrise offers a quieter experience, easier parking, and the best overall conditions for portrait sessions.
Is parking free?
No. Parking at Kapalua Bay is paid and spaces begin filling early in the morning.
Can we get in the water?
Absolutely! If ocean conditions are calm and everyone is comfortable, it’s one of my favorite ways to end a session.
What if it rains?
Passing showers are common on Maui’s west side, but they usually move through quickly. I always keep an eye on the forecast leading up to your session and some of my favorite mornings here have included beautiful rainbows afterward.
If you’re dreaming of calm water, beautiful sunrise light, and one of Maui’s most recognizable beaches, Kapalua Bay is hard to beat. It’s especially wonderful for families and couples looking for a relaxed morning session with plenty of room to explore.
If you’re deciding between Kapalua Bay and another Maui location, I’m always happy to help you choose the beach that best fits your group, the season, and the overall experience you’re hoping for.
