Palauea Beach / White Rock : A Guide to Sunrise Photography sessions on Maui

A family laughing while walking the shoreline of White Rock also known as Palauea Beach in Maui at sunrise.

White Rock, also known as Palauea Beach, is one of those places that has a way of slowing everything down. Early in the morning, the beach is quiet, the light is soft, and there’s plenty of space to simply enjoy being together before the rest of Maui begins to wake up.

It’s a location I frequently recommend for families, couples, maternity sessions, and vacation portraits because it offers a beautiful balance of simplicity and scenery. The wide sandy shoreline, ocean views with the West Maui mountains in the background AND Molokini Crater, and the relaxed atmosphere create a setting where your session can unfold naturally without feeling rushed or crowded.

While every beach on Maui has it’s own personality, White Rock continues to be one of my favorite sunrise locations for creating timeless, natural photographs, and an experience that feels just as memorable as the images themselves.

A Photographer’s Perspective

One thing that often surprises visitors is that many of Maui’s permitted photography locations are situated near resorts or residential neighborhoods. Unlike some destinations where beaches feel completely undeveloped, Maui’s permitted locations often exist alongside the communities that call the island home.

One of the reasons I enjoy photographing at White Rock is that, despite being tucked within a residential area, the homes are set back from the shoreline and softened by mature greenery. From most angles, the beach feels surprisingly secluded, allowing us to create images that highlight Maui’s natural beauty rather than the surrounding neighborhood.

Why Sunrise ?

White Rock is one of the few locations where I exclusively photograph session at sunrise. White both sunrise and sunset can be beautiful on Maui, I’ve found the morning consistently provides the best overall experience for my clients at this location.

☀️ A Quieter Beach

Sunrise allows us to enjoy White Rock before the beach becomes much busier later in the day. A quiet shoreline means fewer distractions, cleaner backgrounds, and a more relaxed experience throughout your Maui photography session.

🌊 Beautiful, Soft Light

The early morning light complements White Rock’s clean shoreline and natural colors, creating timeless photographs with soft, flattering light before the stronger sun arrives later in the morning.

🌴 Calmer Mornings

Another reason I love photographing White Rock at sunrise is the calmer weather. Mornings are often significantly calmer before the afternoon trade winds begin to build, making it more comfortable for families with young children and creating a more mellow session. It’s also a wonderful time for hair, dresses, and lighter clothing to move naturally without constantly being caught by stronger winds.

What to Expect at White Rock

  • A smaller beach with a cozy, intimate feel rather than a long, expansive shoreline.

  • Lava rock framing both ends of the beach, adding a variety and texture to your gallery.

  • Soft sand with a shoreline that naturally slopes towards the ocean.

  • A short walk from the parking area to the beach.

  • A clean, timeless backdrop that keeps the focus on you rather than busy surroundings.

  • Beautiful ocean views that emphasize Maui’s natural beauty despite the nearby residential neighborhood.

Parking & Arrival

- Parking -

Free parking is available along the wide dirt shoulders of the residential street bordering White Rock ( Palauea Beach ). Because I photograph portrait sessions here exclusively at sunrise, parking is typically easy to find and one less thing to worry about before your session.

-Walking to the Beach-

From the parking area, it’s less than a two-minute walk along a shaded dirt path through a grove of kiawe trees before arriving at the shoreline. One of my favorite parts of arriving at White Rock is that the beach remains hidden until you step through the trees, where the ocean gradually comes into view.

-Restroom-

A portable restroom is available near the beach access for convenience before or after your session.

Accessibility

White Rock is a wonderful location but every beach on Maui offers a slightly different experience.

  • I recommend wearing shoes while walking to and from the beach, as kiawe trees naturally drop long thorns along portions of the access path.

  • Strollers can easily be brought along the path and left near the edge of the beach during your session if needed.

  • The beach itself has a natural slope toward the shoreline, which can make walking one challenging for anyone with significant mobility limitations.

  • ♥️ Every family is different. If someone in your group has mobility concerns, I’ll gladly help you choose another Maui location that’s a better fit for everyone’s comfort while still creating the look you’re hoping for.

Wedding Portraits at White Rock

While I photograph lifestyle sessions at White Rock exclusively at sunrise, wedding days naturally follow a different timeline than portrait sessions.

For couples celebrating at nearby venues like Gather on Maui or Hotel Wailea, White Rock can be a beautiful location for a short intimate portrait session following the ceremony. Since these portraits are incorporated into an existing wedding timeline, we’re able to spend just a few minutes capturing the coastline before returning to your celebration.

If you’re planning an intimate Maui elopement, I typically recommend an early morning ceremony at White Rock. Sunrise provides that quieter setting and allows us to enjoy the beach before it becomes more active later in the day.
