Haleakalā - House of the sun .

If you are planning a trip to Maui then you most likely have this breathtaking location on your list of “ to see’s” and if you don’t I highly recommend adding it. Haleakalā is a volcano located on the island of Maui that stands a boasting 10,023 ft. above sea level. Imagine driving a car above the clouds , above the planes, and then boom make that a reality ! Here on Maui it is hands down one of my favorite places to spend time at and universally one of my favorite locations to photograph at. I have been up to the summit countless times and every trip up it never ceases to take my breath away.

It’s well known that Haleakalā is one of the best places to watch sunrise (which it is ) BUT did you know it is also one of the best spots for a couple’s session….now you do. How many people get to say they had their photoshoot basically above the world on a volcano in paradise ?!

This couple below met for the very first time years ago when they were hiking/camping through the volcano’s crater - so of course to celebrate their love story it was only fitting our photoshoot took place where it all began. We decided on a late afternoon photoshoot so we could capture photos all the way through sunset. The day of our session weather blew in but we lucked out with being so high up in elevation that we were above the storm. What we first thought was a downer was that the crater did have some clouds covering the view of all the multicolored volcanic sand BUT the clouds ended up making for some unique dramatic captures. With the cloudy weather we also were able to experience what is called a , “glory”, with rainbows forming around our silhouettes as we hiked down into the crater. Truly wild !

I will say as dreamy as a photoshoot is on a volcano I would recommend it as a location for couples who are all about adventure. To get captures like the ones below we did have to do a little hiking - not a ton but with the high elevation and colder temperatures it is a bit of a trek though the photos/views alone are worth it !
