With how beautiful the scenery is here in Hawaii it’s hard to find a more stunning backdrop for a proposal. If you are planning a trip to paradise and would like to pop the special question during your visit below are some tips for planning a surprise proposal :

Location

Probably a given but think about the following when selecting a location - Do you want to keep it close to your accommodations ? Are you wanting the proposal to take place somewhere that has a special meaning to the both of you ? Do you have an idea in mind already - ex. proposal on Haleakala volcano, helicopter proposal , a hike that has a proposal during it ..the ideas are endless. * Pro if you decide you would like this moment photographed reach out your photographer to help with planning. If you decide to work with me I have a list of some of the best area here on island that also are permitted for photography to take place. With proposal clients I am happy to help with every step all the way down to tips on how/where to stand at the chosen spot to make sure things go smoothly.

Time of Day

It is so important to think about this when planning - Some clients have a special dinner planned to take place after the proposal where the time of day has to be for golden hour into sunset. If you are wanting the moment to be intimate I do want to give a heads up there are no private beaches here in Hawaii meaning most likely others will be in the area the same time as you are. IF you would like to keep this occasion limited to the two of you and maybe a few others passing by in the area I highly encourage a morning proposal. I know that may not sound ideal but pro’s of a morning proposal a) way less crowded beaches with most people exercising in the AM so they are not staying put b) it gives you the rest of the day to celebrate + with the time difference call the loved ones back home to announce the news.

Surprise or Planned

Of course the proposal itself is a surprise but if you plan to have the moment photographed would you like it to be captured in a documentary style OR occur during a planned photoshoot ? Having photographed over 50 proposals here in Hawaii I have seen my fair share of both. If going with a surprise proposal then all details will be hashed out well before the session date. You will know where to walk, where to stand to ask, and any other question you may have answered so you are all set to go with focus only on asking the person you love the big question. If going with planned this means you are both aware of a photoshoot taking place. Perk of this is that your significant other will be dressed up ready to go for photos so comfortable with what they are in for a photoshoot to take place. With planned proposals 10 minutes into the session I will set you both up for a pose that will make asking the question easy to do ( I’ll go over this in more detail upon connecting ) and the rest of the session will then turn into a fun engagement session.
